Our Mission

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children by providing professionally supported, one-to-one, mentoring relationships with responsible and caring volunteers who will support, guide and encourage these children to become confident, caring members of their family, school and community.

Our Background

Established in September of 1982, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley is one of six accredited Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies in the state of Maine.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has remained the expert in youth mentoring since its founding in 1904. We provide one-to-one mentoring relationships between volunteers and children throughout the United States and BBBS International is in 33 countries around the world.

Our History

In 1904, concerned with the suffering and delinquency of the children who came through the court system, New York City Children's Court clerk, Ernest Coulter decided to take action. Coulter had noted the absence of suitable male role models for these young boys, and decided to recruit civic and business leaders as mentors for the delinquent boys who came before him. At a forum with such leaders, Coulter said the young boys he saw come through his court "only guilt [was] that they have been deprived of a basic childhood right - the right to a father's love, understanding and example. It is a right which they and other such children may never receive unless men like us give it to them."
