Mentors in our Community Mentoring program are provided ongoing professional training and support from our staff to ensure an enjoyable relationship for both the child and the volunteer.  This program is a good match for volunteers who are looking for flexibility in sharing mutually enjoyable activities with a child.

Who can be a Community Mentor?
If you are looking to be a friend to a child and are 21 years or older, then you can volunteer as a Community Mentor.  Volunteers in this program come from many different backgrounds and have diverse interests.

How often do matches meet?
Community mentoring is intended to be flexible to both the volunteer's and child's schedule.  All we ask is that mentors meet with their child a minimum of six hours a month.  Some matches meet every week, some every other week.  The key is that volunteers are consistently meeting with their child.

What do we do together?
The possibilities are endless, but for starters you could:

Clean up a park/ Collect bottles · Go to an auction · Wander through a greenhouse · Visit a planetarium/ Visit a museum · Go to a playground · Shop at yard sales · Window-shopping · Go to a library · Tour the National Guard · Visit a farm · Watch a baseball game or hockey game · Shop for groceries or run errands · Go for a car ride (Learn to use a map) · Go on a seal watch or whale watch · Go to the movies · Throw rocks in a river / Feed ducks · Go fishing/ ice fishing · Go to a cemetery and do grave stone rubbing · Tour a college or high school · Go to a play · Take a bus ride /  train ride · Horseback riding · Go to the beach/ Go swimming · Bowling · Look at cars to buy · Go to a high school sports event · Observe a court trial · Visit a nursing home/ Adopt a grandparent · Visit the Little's school · Watch fireworks · Go to the Lighting of the Trees in the Old Port · Go to the Festival of trees at Hinkley · Go to the Colby Art Museum · Walk the UMA trails · Go to an animal shelter with pet treats · Go to holiday craft fairs/ Go to local fairs · Go to the mall · Go out to eat (try new foods) · Pick apples, strawberries or blueberries · Canoeing or boating · Go on a picnic /  Fly a kite · Snow tubing / Sliding · Hiking / Climb a mountain
